70% of shed owners only invest in security after a break in. Don't give light-fingered criminals a green-fingered hand!
1. Secure the access to your shed or garage by locking gates and using thorny bushes next
to walls and fences.
2. Have you visibly marked the contents of your shed? Make a note of serial numbers and
photograph valuable plants, ornaments, machinery and equipment.
3. External security lights which are activated by movement are a useful deterrent.
4. Doors and windows of sheds and outbuildings need securing. Use good quality security
fitments such as padlocks and bolts. Metal grills or locks will help make windows less
vulnerable.
5. Use coach bolts or non-return screws to secure door hinges and locks.
6. Chain cycles, mowers, ladders and tools to a ground anchor or similar device.
7. Mark all valuable items with your postcode or highly visible paint. BNWA has a limited
supply of property marking kits for sale at highly reduced retail prices- click here for
more information.
8. Alarms for sheds and outbuildings are inexpensive and can be obtained from DIY shops,
catalogue shops and builders merchants. BNWA has a limited supply of shed alarms
for sale - click here for more information.
9. Think about a metal shed. These are more resilient and only slightly more costly.
10. Examine your insurance policies. Check that your household policy covers you from theft
from your garden and outbuildings.
